I'd call that a bug, corrected now, thanks for the sharp lookout.

There are some replacement kde packages where 4 (or 6 in my case) packages need to be let go . . . but the pre-du-package check puts them on hold preventing the kde 4.7 upgrade to go ahead - all looks OK with the upgrade now

which packages? do you remember?

Acer modules in smxi are missing in apt.
Let me explain: there is an error in an Acer Aspire machine: nouveau misaligned register, but I am not reporting it here yet, stillhave to research it, then maybe check on Debian forums or report bug. The issue that is relevant to smxi is that I tried to load the acer kernel modules from smxi to try to solve and got the above notice. Back to top |
|||||
all those modules used to be in apt, but most are now built into the kernel. Rather than try to track each version of debian, I just added in a check to see if it's in apt, if not, shows you message.
But I think most of these are gone now, so can probably be removed. However, if the package is gone from stable, testing, and sid, it's safe to say it's gone. Back to top |

the latest skype has a new dependency. could you add it to the initial installation of skype so we don't need to get the error and confirm that we want to install it. thank you.

me, again.
didn't want to bother you, but out of my laziness to start in init 3 here it is. i use nodm, so if i start smxi from desktop x gets stopped and then restarted by nodm. in tty1 i have smxi and in tty7 i have x, is there a workaround for this? edit1: i found this techpatterns.com/forums/about2006.html&highlight=nodm and i still have slim in /etc/X11/default-display-manager . let me remove it. edit2: that did the trick. it stops x for good. i miss when smxi would jump from the gui terminal to tty1 in root. or have i dreamed of such a feature? you didn't quite dream the start smxi in X and have it then run in tty 1, but that was never an idea that was successfully implemented, it's brutally hard to do it, I won't say it's impossible but nobody involved at that time, and quite a few good people looked at the problem, were able to reach an actually acceptable user friendly intuitive solution.
There's actually still a function block in smxi that was left from those early efforts, but the bottom line is, you can't start an application in a virtual terminal in X and then kick it out cleanly to say tty 1 out of X. There's a lot of reasons for that, one being the need to login to the console, but there's a lot more problems. So yes, you did dream it, but I suspect if you've been around a long time, you actually may remember the efforts to achieve that goal, but didn't remember that they were totally dumped because there was no actual way to do it. I think the gotcha is in the 'virtual' part of running a virtual terminal, plus apps actually should not be able to jump from one tty to another. Maybe one day someone will come up with a clean way to do that, but nobody could in the past, so I gave up on it totally. I think we did get it to the point where it would actually be running, but it wasn't correctly interactive, nor did things like ctrl c work, so in terms of safety and usability, it was a no go. Was fun to try though. So ctrl alt f1 is the way to go, to get out of X. Note that of course, you can easily start services, say, apache, gpm, or whatever that are not interactive in X then have them running out of x, that's pretty much unrelated, the gotcha comes with interactive apps.
