Unfortunately that's not as easy as it sounds, the options in smxi all allow installing to new kernel before reboot, but as far as I know the -f, direct binary install option, doesn't work in the fglrx run package, unless they have changed this.

That's the main reason I haven't changed sgfxi to default to -f, unfortunately.

fglrx deb builder installer method (default sgfxi) has been debugged for Debian Testing (antix too) and Debian Stable/Lenny, which should also cover mepis.

This means the install to new kernel feature should be working from smxi's graphic installer question, and that the -f option shouldn't be required any more.

We'll see how this goes, I'm going to guess testing will break as soon as the sid xorg hits testing, but you never know.

Note: the default deb builder method is NOT working in Sid, giving on xserver start the error:
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so undefined symbol: pciNumBuses
which is an old bug from an old fglrx, but it shouldn't be in the new fglrx drivers, so I have to see what is causing that. sgfxi -f works fine for kernels 2.6.30 and older.

Update: fails on lenny 64 bit, works on lenny 32 bit. Go figure.

I think I'll have to finally give up on the deb builder method for fglrx as default, but it will work for some people some of the time as an optional method I think.

But leaving deb builder means I can't install drivers to non running kernels with smxi or sgfxi, which is a loss of a core functionality. IE: sgfxi -f can only be used on the running kernel.

<update> I take it back, I tested this on an updated antix, from 8.0, and it failed, so I am going to now officially give up on sgfxi defaulting to deb builders, it is just not ever going to be reliable again imo, so it will need to be a backup/alternate option only.

I can't use fglrx since the updates with my 200m now but when I did the deb builder always failed. Directly installing the driver was flawless though. FYI.

I officially now give up on ati/amd ever fixing the deb install method, and have made the previous -f option new default.

This has some negative consequences, none of which will actually affect most fglrx users since the stuff has been broken now for months anyway, but it means now you really cannot install to the newly installed kernels, and must always be in the kernel you are installing to, but it will also be more reliable now, since the -f direct install method has been more reliable for quite a while now, in fact, that's one reason that the nvidia method has been so reliable now for so long, it's a direct binary install as well.

New option -F to run the old debian deb builder/installer method from the fglrx run package, that will now only run by special request.

-f still works but is deprecated, ie, it doesn't do anything different than running sgfxi alone.

new fglrx: 9-9
nothing of interest to report, no 2.6.31 support til 9-10

for smxi users, one small change, 9-3 is now the oldest driver offered by default, and the two more recent ones are offered as 1 and 2 options: 9-9 and 9-8 for example this month.

9-3 is the only driver that is actually different in that it supports the older than hd2000 cards that support was dropped for in 9-4.

This is about as far as I'll go for fglrx support in terms of customizations.

new nvidia: 190.40
they call this a pre-release, but I'm calling it a beta to keep it easy, so it installs as beta.
