I have LMDE and a GeForce 7600GS. I ended up installing the 3.6 kernel (previously 3.7) to get it to work. I'm not having much luck finding patches. Can someone direct me to which patches I should test (hopefully to get the latest liquorix kernel running, and I could test other kernels if you want). I'm guessing all patches work only for specific kernels?

sgfxi should now be working for 3.7. and 3.8 for your card, which uses 304.64 driver. Ie, do nothing, just run: sgfxi

and let it do its thing.

Thanks! It worked. Had to use the -f option. It said isgfxi didn't need an update. Maybe it updated when I installed to the 3.6 kernel? Until then I couldn't get it to work.

In my testing here's what I found:

173.14.36 on 3.7.6 amd64 = Works (albeit sluggish on 7xxx cards)
173.14.36 on 3.8.0 amd64 = FAIL (it complains about being unable to determine kernel module file name)

304.64 on 3.7.6 amd64 = Works
304.64 on 3.8.0 amd64 = Works

The drivers work as is on 3.6 kernels as no other special patches needed

Did you try again on 3.7.6 or 3.8?

I'm interested in getting the 313 driver working on 3.8 too (for a friend) and am willing to test building it, but I don't have a card that is supported by 313, so I don't want to actually run nvidia-installer. I know how to extract and patch the NVidia .run package. Is there a way I can just build the driver (using 'make' for instance) without installing it?

Okay, I was able to get the 313.18 driver to build on a 3.8 kernel (32 bit) with just the version.h symlink and this patch:
www.lwfinger.com/nvidia_patches/patch_nvidia_310.19.run_for_3.8
I just ran the nvidia-installer, which of course complained a lot and then failed when trying to insert the module because my video card is a GeForce 6150 LE and needs the 304 driver. But the log showed that the build completed successfully. For what it's worth.

And sgfxi -f very nicely reinstalled the 304 driver and all is well again.

I installed 304.64 on the latest Liquorix 3.7 using sgfxi -f (sgfxi told me to do so) and it worked, which I didn't expect. All my kernels are Liquorix.

version.h symlink and that patch is what sgfxi was using or is now using for 3.8 / 313.18 so sgfxi should be working in theory for 313.18 / 3.8

Got it working with 3.8 too now.

But I had to use sgfxi -f as the normal call of sgfxi brought me :

ERROR: (171) The kernel module build failed with error code: 1

This error was also in the logs. No further useable messages included in there.
