I just tried dist-upgrading my box, but it aborted and would not continue. same result using smxi, or just straight "apt-get -f dist-upgrade" from the console

this is where it stops:

:: Code ::
initramfs-tools (0.94) unstable; urgency=low

  * To improve boot speed and avoid some complications, video drivers are
    no longer included in the initramfs by default (MODULES=most).

linux-2.6 (2.6.32-11) unstable; urgency=low

  * This release replaces the old IDE (PATA) drivers with new drivers
    using 'libata' on all architectures.  This change was previously made
    for the i386 and amd64 architectures.

    The automatic upgrade code does not support the configuration files
    of many of the boot loaders used on other architectures, so you may
    be prompted to make changes manually.

to complete the upgrade I am using synaptics from the gui which I know is stupid but at least it is not aborting.

what the heck is going on?? how do I fix this?

thanks!

It's waiting for a response, have you tried hitting enter? This type of thing I first thought was an error when I saw it, but then I learned that the user had installed some other apt tools, one of which creates this type of output, and expects you to hit enter or something else to continue but doesn't tell you this.

I see this once in a while, sometimes when people are using apt-list bugs for example.

"enter" did nothing. I had to do "ctrl-C" to break it.

using synaptics and the gui, I got the same screen, closed the dialog box, and then everything proceeded o.k.

i think it is waiting for something, but i don't know what or why.

I've gotten this type of report before, and it turned out to be correct, not an error, and was caused by something like apt-list or something like that.

I think you'll find a thread here on it but I can't remember the topic, sorry.

I would like to tell you that sidux devs have an answer but this post currently is too early to tell?

sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-20423.html

2) I have yet to smxi to that version but try this

:: Code ::

update-initramfs -vu

mine builds with no errors reported but have yet to reboot to test

That's another issue I believe, not sure.

This is about a hang, and that's related I believe to an installed extra apt tool of some type, I wish I could remember the details, but this is actually the correct functioning of that tool, I remember this because when I saw this first, I thought it was something really wrong, but it turned out to be a very strange idea of 'correct behavior' and not an actual bug, though of course, presenting a user with something with no hint or clue of what action is required is a particularly bizarre kind of usability, something only the type of mindset found in cli addicts who insist using a tool like vi is normal in any way could consider acceptable...

yes, I think the issue aus9 linked to is something else. i would try asking on sidux, but this box is the one running pure sid - and i don't feel like having a flame war.

if i switch over to using aptitude instead of apt, would that be a do-able work-around?

Just ask at irc.oftc.net #debian , create a paste of what you posted here, using paste.debian.net give them the link, and see what they say. Do NOT paste the actual message in the channel, that makes them grouchy.

Also do this first: dpgk -l | grep apt
and show the output here as well, that might reveal that extra package, somethink like apt-listbugs I think it is, I will recognize it if I see it, it's one of the non core apt tools that does exactly this.

This is kind of a 'release notes' feature. I've been seeing it for a while.
It's like a manual page: press 'Q' to go back to the upgrade screen.

I have no idea if it's possible to skip it.

I also was presented with one of those screens this past week. It was not any of those mentioned and I don't recall how I got rid of it due to my going nuts in the attempt. I hope this "new & exciting" feature of debian is squashed real soon.
