Thanks to a fine bug report, with log files etc, by gazza, I believe the bug with nouveau blacklist/reboot, install nvidia issue has been resolved.
The bug was a black screen on reboot, or cursor blinking, the cause was failing to write vesa driver to xorg.conf, that bug is now fixed, or should be. Back to top |

2.6.38 driver install problem
I've not been able to install an nvidia driver with 2.6.38-1.slh so I've gone back to 2.6.37 for the time being. Not sure where to start on this . . . .
UPDATE The problem is discussed at aptosid.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=962&highlight= Back to top |

slh doesn't care about users, don't you know that? He doesn't care about their needs, he told me that personally. And he also hates non free software, especially drivers for video cards people need to actually use their systems productively. The only reason he doesn't apply patches that would make fglrx and nvidia fail permanently is that he'd lose most of his core tester/supporter group, leaving him stuck there pretty much alone except a few other zealots. As usual, aptosid users are what keep that distro even remotely usable, without them it would be an absurdly useless project.
Switch to Liquorix and you'll be fine, or use Sid kernel, also fine. I honestly don't know why anyone uses slh kernels to be honest. And by all means, don't use those kernel metapackages, there's a reason smxi asks you first run if you want to remove them, kernels aren't like firefox, they should be updated only when required, otherwise you risk hardware or driver or module failure. My years of experience here have proved that to me time and time again. There's a reason smxi developed the way it did, it was in response to the failures and problems I saw users in the real world having, and times like this remind me of just why the set of features here related to kernels was developed in the first place. A good reason to stay away from slh's kernels. If I install aptosid, first thing I do is install Liquorix kernel then run sgfxi to install the nvidia driver. Works every time and haven't had a real failure with Liquorix kernels.

@Deepdayze - have you a view on the 'speed' of Liquorix versus slh?

The desktop oriented optimization and speed of liquorix is the entire focus of the work damentz does. The main difference is that he is willing to experiment, and has, and not all those experiments have worked out. This is why I suggest users skip the initial major kernel versions, -0 and -1, and start at the -2, then stay with the latest of that major series until the next series is debugged and ready to go.
for example: 2.6.37-2.dmz.1-liquorix-686 damentz has always been interested in kernel desktop optimization, and in fact, the reason he started liquorix is because the people at sidux refused to listen to or admit that anything he said was worth considering. In other words, liquorix, like inxi, was born directly out of the assinine policies and attitudes promoted within the core sidux/aptosid group. Back to top |
