can you try this: sgfxi -! 6 -c
to test the current stable, that will override the error handler for xorg 1.7 nvidia. I'll remove drivers from it as they are confirmed good and working.

Both stable and beta drivers appear to be working fine here . . . except the init 3 termination signal fails with the beta driver (no issues with the stable driver though).

drb, thanks for confirming. I created a new testing install for nvidia, and can also confirm, 195.xx 190.53, 173.current, and maybe 96.current all work.

nvidia as usual is on the ball.

updated sgfxi to support those drivers.

Nvidia claims 96.latest supports xorg 1.7 so I'm leaving that as supported. Maybe you need the actual cards it handles, don't know, my tests failed.

fglrx 10-1 added. That's the 'still no xorg 1.7 support' edition.

3 new legacy drivers today, as pre-release but I'm setting them as new stables for now.

173.14.25: release notes: www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2175902

96.43.16: release notes: www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2175900

71.86.13: release notes: www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2175898

Sounds to me like all just do something to make them work with new kernels, I assume 2.6.33 since I haven't heard any issues with 2.6.32.

As usual, nvidia is on the job, releasing when needed, not on that silly monthly schedule ati/amd insists on following even though their monthly releases are almost always pointless. Hint: release when you have a new feature ready, new xorg/kernel support working. Really, it does work better.

bug reports: www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678

As always, check sgfxi -L d
to see latest live drivers in sgfxi, you can run that as regular user, in X, desktop, nice way to see if a new driver has been added to the server's sgfxi version yet or not.

Use Jockey to disable (it removes packages) fglrx then tried script

sgfxi -F fails (as it did with Nvidia)

plain sgfxi worked

Note: sgfxi will find no xorg.conf - so it uses Xorg -configure to produce one, then edits it to use fglrx. This doesn't add and composite extensions by default - so needs to be added to end of file:

:: Code ::

Section "Extensions"
   Option      "Composite"   "enable"
EndSection

I prefer the advice in the unofficial Ati wiki to use:
wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Jaunty_Installation_Guide#6._Generate_a_new_.2Fetc.2FXorg.conf_file

:: Code ::

aticonfig --initial -f

to produce just the necessary conf to get the driver working
Performance is still cr#p until you use the Ati config tool from the menu to:

select:

3d >> MoreSettings:

Vertical Refresh to performance
(optional)
Enable Catalyst AI

After this fgl_glxgears jumped from ~50fps to ~400fps!

Now whether this will weather any future kernel upgrades, as dkms has been taking care of this so far, remains to be seen - fingers crossed!
