Just to make my own confirmation. Last two weeks I was also getting the network error problem just trying to run smxi at all.. Down grading wget from 1.19.2.0 to 1.19.1-5. I have it on hold now and things are working well. As for the video driver issues I can not relate to as I have had no need to upgrade lately.

The latest script failed to download NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-387.34.run. I downloaded it and manually placed it in /usr/src/sgfxi-downloads/, and then ran the script. Same installation results:

the failed message means it failed to remove the module, but many times it works anyway.
Sometimes something has locked the module which makes removing it fail. the other part I don't know anything about, at first I thought you meant sgfxi failed to download the driver .run package, but that's obviously not the case since it downloaded, then that failed. You can always use sgfxi -o 384.98 or sgfxi -o 384.90 if that driver is supposed to work. The debian nvidia driver IS the proprietary driver, that's just a wrapper around it, that's all. all you have to do is check what version it's at then you'll see, they are probably behind the current nvidia. when I checked, it says current nvidia-driver is 375.82, which means this has nothing to do with debian packaging, it's just about the driver version, and possibly some change required re that package. Debian packagers don't have any special access to the driver blob, it's the same one that's in the run package, just packaged for debian, that's all. Back to top |

With smxi-sgfxi or just running sgfxi, I have no ability to "install a full copy of libglvnd". I guess I can wait for updated mesa libs to come through. Unfortunately, ALL of this happened at the same time - updated Xorg, update mesa libs, and the wget problem. Do you have any suggestions (short or reinstalling debian) to clear the system and try a fresh driver installation? sgfxi has always offered the option to seamlessly go between non free run package, debian package, and xorg nvidia, so that's the answer to one of your questions. Not sure why you believe you have to reinstall the os to change which driver you are using, that seems to be a windows notion that has crept into debian/ubuntu world.
sgfxi has always cleaaned out stuff, then done whatever is required to carry out the action required. Note that -! 5 is a development flag that lets me test just the download and extraction component of sgfxi, it is NOT meant for normal user use, but since it triggers the same exact sequence of commands internally, I've always used it to make sure a driver run package exists, and is not corrupted. 1. Note, by simply querying the nvidia run package, with --help, then -A for advanced options, I found the right flag, so I've added --install-libglvnd as default nvidia install, and added -g which turns it OFF, that is, uses the -no-install-libglvnd flag on the install. The default is to install it.
I have not tested this, but the flag may override the question, I don't know. It's difficult to figure out an issue report when it has several parts, one which is unrelated to sgfxi (wget -O option being broken - haven't the wget devs ever heard of testing their code before releasing it? that was not a subtle issue, they should just have a script that executes all the main wget commands that they run before releasing it, sigh). The not downloading the run package doesn't seem to be a real issue, since the run package does download. The nvidia installer wanting its own libglvnd is a new thing, which I have not dealt with explicitly, because it's rare for nvidia to actually need new stuff that it itself installs. Back to top |
Trust me when I tell you that reinstalling the OS was not really an option, but more of an outburst of frustration. The only reason I thought about it was the "failed to remove NVIDIA module" error, but I addressed it another way.

I'm not sure why the developer doesn't just patch 1.19.2. I would try to patch it myself, but I can't find an installed file that's "patchable". Maybe we could ask the dev to patch 1.19.2, but developers don't usually do that. He's already slated the fix to be applied to 1.19.3, and we're probably months away from that flowing into debian. Note, by simply querying the nvidia run package, with --help, then -A for advanced options, I found the right flag, so I've added --install-libglvnd as default nvidia install, and added -g which turns it OFF, that is, uses the -no-install-libglvnd flag on the install. The default is to install it. The nvidia installer wanting its own libglvnd is a new thing, which I have not dealt with explicitly, because it's rare for nvidia to actually need new stuff that it itself installs. Now I'm not so sure. In the nvidia forums complaint, the last comment was that everything that should be there was there. And if I go into Synaptic and try installing libglvnd0-nvidia (the only related file that's not installed), Synaptic wants to uninstall half of my OS. But OK on the added --install-libglvnd. That may be the ticket. I think I'm going to wait to see what happens when the updated mesa comes into sid before I mess with this again. sgfxi uses curl to download now by default.
So that wget issue is largely irrelevant. As I said, I added a flag to the nvidia installer though I don't like doing that because it can impact other parts of the system undesirably, and I can't undo it if nvidia installs over a debian package, which is generally a no no. The rest of the stuff I can't say anything about, the issues you've posted on should all be resolved, which running sgfxi should show. the nvidia module failing to unload happens frequently, I've found that sometimes if you sometimes just run sgfxi again without start X that message goes away, but it is a correct message, it means the module failed to unload, or had an error on unload, etc, and that's because something is hanging on to it and not letting go. Usually driver installs work fine with that error, but it's a real error, which is why it shows. Back to top |

I think I'm going to start doing this every time. Not that that's the issue here...
