Hello.

I just built a new system using the AMD FX8350. My old system was installed on an SSD on an old Core 2 Duo machine, 64-bit. I assumed there would be no problem with the transplant because the Intel 64 bit and AMD 64 bit run on the same kernel architecture. My OS is LMDE. I am using the latest Liquorix kernel unless it's been updated since yesterday.

My card is an nVidia GeForce 8400GS, the PCI version (anyways...). On the previous computer it ran perfectly fine.

My previous computer would freeze my SSD for no reason if it was the boot device so I installed GRUB on another drive which booted the OS on the SSD. On my new computer this is no longer necessary. So I ran a livecd and tried "grub-install /dev/sda3", and it told me something about blocklists being unreliable and refused to install. On my SSD I have root and home folders as BTRFS, but the /boot directory is ext4.

So I installed boot-repair and ran that. Now linux boots and appears to be fully functional. One difference is that the SSD is /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb. But I checked /etc/fstab and everything seems in order.

Problem is, I've run sgfxi numerous times trying different things and I still get this "no screens found" error. I don't know what to do now. I even installed the noveau drivers and I still get the same error.

Here is Xorg.0.log:

to test nouveau, do this: sgfxi -N nouveau

then mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf to something else, like xorg.conf-full then reboot.

If you let x do its thing with no xorg usually it will work.

no screens found almost always means an error in your xorg.conf

If you run Xorg -configure it will create a new xorg.conf file which you then can move to /etc/X11 and try that, rebooting I find helps too.

But you can be fairly certain it's your xorg.conf file.

The fact that you seem surprised that a dynamically set path like
"One difference is that the SSD is /dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb"

suggests you may not be fully clear on how the linux kernel works, you should NEVER use hard coded /dev paths anywhere in your system, with one exception: /dev/disk/by-label/disk-label or /dev/disk/by-uuid/uuiud numbers string. However, that's not related to x not finding your screen, that error is almost always xorg.conf error. mv /cp your old one and first try with no xorg.conf at all after running sgfxi to install nouveau, which will also remove all blacklisting and rebuild the initrd image, then see if you get your desktop with nouveau, if you do, you know your xorg.conf file is to blame. Then regenerate a new one and put that in /etc/X11/ then reboot to see if that works with nouveau, if it does, the main issue is resolved, then run sgfxi to reinstall the video driver, if it works, there are issues with 3.8 nvidia right now though and a patch I just added may or may not fix it.

Thanks a lot!

I'm definitely not fully clear on how Linux works. I've had a hard time figuring out how to approach it, and to find the time. I'm gradually picking things up, but I need to do some study; I just don't know where to find the information explained concisely.

BTW, that was me accidentally posting the sfxi log in in the other thread. I deleted it immediately.

It worked! Thanks a lot! I had already suspected it was a botched Xorg.conf, but I was not confident enough to even try...

For some reason my motherboard won't recognize my PCIe graphics card though. It's a 7600GS. Any idea on what motherboard settings could affect this? In the Bios it had options for PCIe spread spectrum, and PCIe speed (100-150).

after updating inxi with: inxi -U
as root.

some amd motherboards do not play well with nvidia cards.

mobo has amd chipset, as I suspected. Sometimes specific cards just don't work, google the motherboard brand/model and the word nvidia and linux and maybe you'll find the issue, or not.

Well, I held my breath and plugged the graphics card into the very last PCIe slot. And it worked! Strange.

But now I have another problem. When I used sgfxi for the first card, it told me the kernel headers weren't installed. They were, but I ran smxi and resinstalled the kernel. Then it worked.

This time, no matter what I do, sgfxi ends telling me there was either an error, or it does that but includes the driver error text. sgfxi.log:

Also, the nouveau drivers give me a full-resolution TTY console on startup. Can I get sgfxi to do this?

I've been having issues with this MB.

When I enable power saving, the intenet connection goes.
Randomly at startup or while in use I'll start having USB I/O errors which will freeze the system.
Linux reports hardware/firmware errors (something about AMD Vi) and is unstable with I/O errors if I enable IOMMU.

I've gotten it down to a set of settings that seems to work, but I still have this "SP5100: mmio address already in use" error, and it still has USB problems. This is strange since this MB uses an SB950, not an SP5100 (maybe the SP5100 driver runs both?).

I am going to RMA this MB and get another one. I'm hoping that the EVO R2.0 has some kinks worked out.
