Ok, thanks for the quick test. I'm going to see if we can fix these patches rather than remove them for the 2.6.36 kernel. 2.6.37 is right around the corner and I would like you guys to have some good memory management for 2.6.36.

I don't think it is the kernel in my case -

I was not having this severity of problems last week with the same Kernel[-2.6.36-2.dmz.5-liquorix-amd64 x86_64-]
until _after_ a d-u on 12/27.

Now, (Platform Version 4.5.3 (KDE 4.5.3) If I go into the System settings panel and choose multimedia - there's only the pulseaudio sound server listed, and if I click the 'test' box, system settings locks up entirely reporting

"Phonon – System Settings" is not responding. It belongs to the application systemsettings (Process ID = 2199, hostname = localhost).

There were oddities with 'multiple sources playing', but now:

Total Failures / lockups: KMPlayer 0.11.2c, juk3.4.2, dragon player2.0, gmplayer, mpd

Success with vlc, quod libet, audacity

Actually, if I could easily have gotten rid of pulseaudio, I would have - tried a couple of times, but it doesn't seem like it can be torn out without doing major damage to the sound system.

regards,

One last test kernel to test the possibility that some mm-preemption patches are the source of the kernel oops: 2.6.36-2.dmz.6-test02 - liquorix.net/test/

For anyone interested on which patch is causing the oops, you can read here: git.zen-kernel.org/zen-stable/commit/?h=misc-2.6.36&id=8617682d06a4bc060c1da61ee4b5f1f7a0e90a28

Hmm, that might actually be a KDE bug. Did you upgrade from 4.5.2 to 4.5.3?

damentz,
still no luck with the test2 kernel.

BTW I don't use pulse audio. Youtube plus opening any audio or video file causes a freeze and the errors on reboot/shutdown posted by henrik above.

The latest MEPIS 2.6.36 kernel works ok.

2.6.36-2.dmz.6-test03 is on it's way to the same test directory. This version includes a patch from Minchan that might correct the oops with two audio streams playing from ALSA.

Can someone confirm that this corrects the oops?
