Hard drive problem, locks up

I have a new 300 gig harddrive that I use to store mp3 files only. Its my music library. I play the files with winamp. Ocassionally it locks up and stops playing the song or plays a piece of the song over and over agian. my computer is a dell dimension with a pentium 3. Please help cause this is aggrivating.

Hi Brian, that doesn't sound like a hardware related problem to me.

What you should do is use the Windows tools to see if you are getting a disk read error.

You find that by going to:

Start => Control Panel => Administrative tools => event viewer => system.

What you are looking for is red or yellow warning flags that indicate disk read errors. If you see such errors, there is probably a problem with your hard disk. If you don't, there is a probably a problem with winamp.

My first guess is a winamp bug, to be honest. Winamp development was stopped by AOL, and the latest version, 5, had lost the hearts and souls of the main developers, who no longer work for AOL/winamp. Justin and company that is.

I suspect a software issue, not a hardware issue.
