Rootkits head to BIOS
You had to figure this one was coming. With all those ACPI options new motherboards are giving operating systems makers and motherboard manufactorers [you know, set system fan speed, live overclocking, etc], it was just a matter of time before crackers started taking a close look at acpi bios rootkits
:: Quote :: "It is going to be about one month before malware comes out to take advantage of this," said Greg Hoglund, CEO of reverse engineering firm HBGary and editor of Rootkit.com. "This is so easy to do. You have widely available tools, free compilers for the ACPI language, and high-level languages to write the code in."This is with the recent focus on rootkits. So more stuff to be aware of, maybe time to lock down the bios if you haven't set your security settings there to alert you to attempts to write to the bios. And you thought that all went away when people stopped using floppies. Back to top |
