Display not Recognized
Hi.
I've got a new system running AV Linux which is a Debian distro using XFCE openbox. My CPU is a 12th Gen i5 Alder Lake with integrated graphics. The default kernel (5.11 - I think) doesn't have drivers for the integrated Alder Lake graphics and the display is stuck at the grub resolution. I changed to the Liquorix kernel and this partially fixes the problem. On boot up, the resolution gets set to match my monitor, but the display GUI lists the display as "default". I'm unable to add a second monitor. xrandr lists no providers and /var/log/Xorg.0.log has a ton of invalid argument lines in it. When multiple monitors are plugged in at boot, it configures one screen, for the smaller one. Unplugging a monitor crashes the display. I've seen that 5.16 begins support for the Alder Lake integrated graphics, and running 5.16RC8 on Ubuntu gives me normal video behavior (but other insurmountable problems). I'm out of ideas. Is there anymore information on the current kernel's support for this display or anybody see anything I'm missing? :: Code :: xrandr program version 1.5.0

You should have waited to get alder lake until the kernel really supports it, which will / might be a few months from now. Expect more problems until they get support stabilized.
I would have waited for Zen 4 myself, which is close to release. Would have been interesting to see current inxi 3.3.11 for alder lake, I have not seen one since the big inxi cpu upgrades were done. Try updating inxi to current git version, inxi -U (change /etc/inxi.conf B_ALLOW_UPDATE=true) then show: inxi -bCaz Not the current ubuntu inxi, that's out of date. Back to top |

You're not going to like this recommendation, but it's probably best that you buy a used GPU if you just need a display output.
Considering the size of your display, 3440x1440, I recommend a Radeon card with 4GB of VRAM. If you search ebay for radeon 4gb and sort by lowest price, I'm seeing lots of good deals for the R7 350/450. Many of them are OEM cards which will be good enough to hold you over until your integrated GPU is fully supported. They go for about $50-$75, with more recent cards supported natively by the amdgpu driver if you pay more money. EDIT: Make sure you take a look at the type of VRAM in the description. Avoid DDR3/4 like the plague, make sure it's a GDDR4/5 type. Back to top |

Sorry, took a few days getting back to this post.
I know the 5.16-RC8 drivers work. Is there any possibility of backporting those drivers? @damentz: All things considered, it's not terrible. I'm in over a grand on this, what's fifty bucks even for a few months. I actually tried buying an old card, but the system wouldn't boot with it installed. I could try a new low-spec card. @techAdmin - All things considered, I've had better luck on AMD (and that pattern continues), but for this project I was trying to optimize cores/$$ and the i5 was the sweet spot. I'm not going to go hungry waiting for the updates. inix -bCaz :: Code ::

ah, there's a small bug in inxi for alder lake, it wasn't supposed to say tpc: 2 after the st: 4 (single threaded cores).
I never actually tested the new cpu logic on a live alder lake, so missed that one. Otherwise it looks good, thanks. That inxi alder lake glitch was just forgetting to make an elseif rather than an if. That's corrected in pinxi latest. Glad to see that otherwise alderlake cpu logic is working exactly as hoped for, that was one of the reasons that the cpu logic was totally rewritten, it's previous total inability to deal with that scenario. Thanks for confirming, that's actually the first alder lake sample I've seen for the new inxi cpu logic. I would have gone with a 12 core ryzen, also saw some really good sale prices on threadripper high core count zens. Mobos on those might be expensive though. Back to top |

@techAdmin
Tell me please. I see on the Internet that Liquorix kernel is more optimized for Intel processors and Xanmod kernel for AMD processors. So it is advised to use Xanmod for AMD processors owners. Is this information correct or wrong? Back to top |
|||||
Liquorix is not optimized more for Intel or AMD. However, the split cache by multi CCX per CCD of Ryzen 1000, 2000, and 3000, does not help with cache coherency. Ryzen 5000 and up solve this problem by having all cores on a single die share the same L3 cache.

Liquorix is now on kernel 5.16, has anything improved with this version on your system?
