Do I need to wait a bit to grab the kernel if I'm running Testing or do I need to change the codename
to 'Buster' in the .list file? I haven't used Liquorix yet and am trying to use the kernel now.

You can follow testing, I update the code name symlinks about a week after release. It's probably best though that you follow the real code name of the Debian you're using, that way you get to choose when you're reading to follow testing again.
