I am not at the problem system right now, so I can't paste the logs (I'll do that later) but basically I've tried many times to install the nvidia driver and I can't remove nouveau. smxi and sgfxi error out when trying to remove nouveau and shutdown and wait a while doesn't help. My kernel is a 3.8 -- I also tried 3.9 liquorix kernel.
I purged nouveau and shut down, but the driver is still there when I turn the system back on.

All fixed now -- I had blacklisted the driver but I needed to add the line
options nouveau modeset=0
