the computer was working really hard and all was laggy, so i checked inxi and i have noticed that i run in single core instead of dual core. does anyone have any idea what is wrong? could it be thermal throttling?

show this: cat /proc/cpuinfo

to make sure my recent update did not break something in the cpu section, it should not have, but one never knows.

Let's look at the /proc/cpuinfo, but your description makes me fear that a cpu core died.

i'm in the middle of something, but i will try with an older liveusb to see if it's something like acpi. if not that sucks.

looks bad to me, if inxi was showing you two cores before, and now shows one, that's a sign that it may not physically be present.

I don't know how the intel cpus handle heat issues so I could be wrong on this, but given your description, I have to wonder.

no luck with the older liveusb. i will leave it over night to cool off, but i don't have my hopes up.

Very odd indeed. Like h2, I think there's a hardware restriction happening behind the scenes. Is there anything in the bios that might help you understand what's going on? You have a thinkpad, so maybe the bios will include more information than the typical consumer laptop.

after a cold boot the core is back on. it seams strange to throttle at those temps. i guess i need to change the thermal compound on it.
edit: also earlier i was not able to post replies on the forum. i have a dynamic IP from the ISP, so that must be the cause. strange things are happening this weekend.

good, so inxi can be trusted. There's some xeon glitches I'm working on now, that manifest in some vm /proc/cpuinfo so I have to be careful how I work around those glitches, ie, not break existing stuff.
