1. asix module is kind of troublesome, but, eventually, it works...
2. no luck using any DM/startx/xinit/WM, although that same config worked with older 3.8.0-2 or something like that...
ATI card with 13.04 Ubuntu, Gnome Shell latest from 3.8 PPAs...
Same machine works with no glitches with 3.9-999, 3.9-996, 3.8.0-18-generic #28 (Ubuntu)

show inxi -bxxx so we don't have to guess about your system.

I am not the one able to help you, but my serious advice is this

Be as specific as you can!

If you write your post, re-read it. If you think, you've been specific enough, try to make it even better!

Your problem description was this
:: Quote ::

1. asix module is kind of troublesome, but, eventually, it works...
2. no luck using any DM/startx/xinit/WM, although that same config worked with older 3.8.0-2 or something like that...

I have (almost) no idea what your problem is. Obviously, graphical environments do not start. But you give no hint as to what is happening instead, no error message, info about your DM, nada.

If you talk about a "newest" kernel, the reader has to guess. Be specific! You require help, so be as kind to the reader as possible...
:: Code ::

uname -a

Cheers

it sounds, looking at his inxi -bxx, like something glitched in the ati/radeon xorg driver, which would hardly be unusual or unexpected.

this would have nothing to do with liquorix, that would be maybe in the radeon kms stuff in the kernel, or in the xorg driver for ati.

Try fglrx driver instead, at least that will give you a baseline, though I'm not sure fglrx supports 3.8 kernel yet.

It does 3.7 though, so one could try that.

I looked at the kernel patches specific to ubuntu raring, and only found one patch related to DRM that could possibly be related. The original bug was here: bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=807850. The rest of the out-of-tree DRM patches and bug fixes were for intel and nouveau, so probably not related.

I'll try adding the patch below into zen sources and release a new kernel package when there's a few more things I can bundle: lkml.org/lkml/2013/4/1/341
