show inxi -bxxx after upgrading inxi to latest version with: inxi -U

Make sure to update first , mint uses an ancient inxi for some inexplicable reason.

The errors are clear enough, your gdm isn't getting killed. Among other errors.

Hopefully mint hasn't adopted some kind of login that can't be killed, but it may just be a new syntax or something for the login manager.

I tested the download/extract part of the new driver install and that works fine, so whatever issue you are having is not related to that I believe.

show this: ls /run

There may be an issue between gdm and cinnamon desktop, or it may be that you are actually using another display manager login thing of unknown variety.

Also as regular user, not root, show: inxi -Gx

dont' show inxi as root, it tells you you are doing that.

in a console, as regular user, not root, show it. regular user has a $ sign at the prompt, root has a #.

I'm wondering if this is an upstart issue, I don't use it and have never seen it, maybe it has different commands or something.

Get out of X, and then run this command as root: service gdm stop
and note what happens, what errors if any.

upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/

yes, there's something holding it, but the service command is still working, that's good to know.

I took a quick look at that upstart thing from ubuntu but it's too long to get a hold of.

See if you can find someone in mint/ubuntu who can tell you in plain simple commands
a: how to stop/start gdm
b: if gdm says: waiting, what to do then

also, when you ran that command out of x as root, did it in fact kill gdm? Or did it not?

You can see which by doing this:

service gdm stop && echo success || echo failure

that will check the return code from the operation requested. If it says failure, that means that gdm did not in fact shutdown as requested.
