Again, from now on post ALL relevant data until we pin down which kernels are failing and why.

It is hard to answer all your questions if you keep making new posts or editing them while I am responding to them.

:: techAdmin wrote ::

If you post further in this thread, post the results, each time, for your installed kernel with the ls of /usr/src kernel I posted above

I already ran the commands and told you the result, they are there i.e. not missing.
:: arclance wrote ::

I have the "version.h" link, I am using Liquorix so I already have it, adding "-f" changes nothing.

:: Code ::

ls /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)/include/generated/uapi/linux
version.h
ls /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)/include/linux | grep version
version.h

If you want me to post the results of the commands themselves ask for that specifically.
I had to check them manually for the 3.7.6, 3.7.8, and 3.7.9 kernels anyway since I am booted into 3.7.5 right now.
The link is there for all of them, no doubt because I am using Liquorix.

post: inxi -SCx so I can see your system at a glance.

Here you go, now that I know what specific options you want I can give you what you want.
This is the computer that I still have 313.18 installed on the 3.7.8 Liquorix kernel.
:: Code ::

inxi -SCx
System:    Host TheForge Kernel 3.7.8-zen.liquorix.3.7.0-8.1-arc.1 x86_64 (64 bit) Distro CrunchBang Linux statler
CPU:       Dual core Intel Core2 6420 (-MCP-) cache 4096 KB flags (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 ssse3 vmx) bmips 8511.6
           Clock Speeds: (1) 2127.903 MHz (2) 2127.903 MHz

I installed it with the older version of sgfxi, 4.20.26, six days ago.

This is my other computer, the one that won't install 313.18 on a 3.7 kernel higher than 3.7.5.
:: Code ::

System:    Host The-Hammer Kernel 3.7.5-zen.liquorix.3.7.0-5.1-arc.1 x86_64 (64 bit) Distro CrunchBang Linux statler

I had successfully installed 313.18 on the Liquorix 3.7.8 kernel on this computer as well with sgfxi 4.20.26 at the same time as on the other one.
When I updated to 3.7.9 on this computer I was unable to install 313.18 on that kernel even with "-f".
I rebooted to 3.7.8 and was unable to install 313.18 on it anymore.
Then I tired 3.7.6 and it failed as well.
All three failed with the

Are you using the default Statler repos? ie Debian squeeze.

Maybe somewhere here lies the problem?

No, the i7 (the one with the problem) is completely Sid now.
It only says statler because I have not looked into how to change what it says yet.

The Core2 is mostly Sid/Testing.
It is not completely Sid because it took 4 hours to do to the other computer and needed a lot of manual intervention to prevent breaking the system.
I have not tired anything with this one yet (I try things on the i7 first) so I can't say if it will have the same problem or not.
I think it will though since they are setup almost identically.

try it again, I changed the patch to the 3.8 one, that way at least I'll know if that works.

Again, it's hard to know what's up because my liquorix requires no patch on 3.7 kernel, latest.

However, do note that I'm using a liquorix standard kernel deb install, and you're clearly not running the deb version given the uname -r of your kernel.

That does not work either for 3.7.6 and up, 3.7.5 still works.

Please check /var/log/nvidia-installer.log for more information about the failure.
A copy of this nvidia error log is also here: /var/log/sgfxi/sgfxi.log
Please try to reinstall the driver using: sgfxi -f (force override module build)
because sometimes modules cannot be built to new kernels without the source
being patched first, which requires a driver reinstall.

Again, it's hard to know what's up because my liquorix requires no patch on 3.7 kernel, latest.

However, do note that I'm using a liquorix standard kernel deb install, and you're clearly not running the deb version given the uname -r of your kernel.

I built the kernel my self, starting with Liquorix.
I need some non-standard build options for my wireless card because the ath9k devs decided it was a good idea to hide hardware settings (ANI (Adaptive Noise Immunity)) in its debugfs interface.
:: Code ::

CONFIG_MAC80211_DEBUGFS=y
CONFIG_ATH9K_DEBUGFS=y
CONFIG_ATH_DEBUG=y

compat-drivers was half broken for 3.7 (ath9k did not build at all) until recently so I started building the kernel instead.
I have not made any changes to my build setting alterations since 3.7.5 (other than the ones that change in Liquorix itself) and it works up to 3.7.5 so I don't think my settings are the problem.
The fact that a different version of sgfxi worked with my 3.7.8 kernel also makes me suspect that it is not due to some change I made.

I'm not going to support this issue anymore, but I did try just to make sure, this is today, using the 3.8 patch for 313.18 and -f and the latest liquorix:

driver installed fine, no failures, patch applied fine, no failures, x started fine, no failures.

I won't accept any more issue reports unless you use a standard kernel or liquorix/siduction/aptosid/debian kernels without further modification, any issues you find using your own spins are not my problem, and I don't have the resources or time to try to deal with custom kernels.

3.7-9 worked fine, and now 3.7-10 works fine, and all my other kernels also have worked fine, which is what made this issue so frustrating.

Again, you can ask damentz what he thinks might cause the failure, but please don't ask for support until you run standard kernels, it's not fair or right for you to use my time this way.

h2,

Just to point out that antiX kernels work just fine as well.

anticap, thanks for confirming. It's clear from the error message he posted that his build of the kernel headers didn't work right, and that these are NOT correctly done kernels.

However, on the bright side, the patches now work, except for 3.8 kernels and 173.14.36, if you hear or see of a patch that works can you get a link and post it? That's the only one that doesn't work.

I'm not patching the long term release driver 310.32 because 313.18 works and that's good enough for now.

I was able to figure out where to modify sgfxi to use a different patch from your last commit.
It works if I use this patch.

I don't know what could be causing the problem for me and you don't need to look into it anymore but maybe this will help if someone else has the same problem.
