sgfxi and libkwinnvidiahack4
Hi. I'm trying sgfxi in kubuntu 12.04 and have some trouble. It worked like a breeze in Mint 13, but in kde it uninstalls Kwin and I can't get a working window manager. libkwinnvidiahack4 gets removed and kwin gets removed with it. If I reinstall kwin, it breaks my setup and the nvidia driver. I tried with compiz as window manager instead but then I get no window decorations (there is some fixes suggested for that at compiz but none of them worked). Is there a way I can install Kwin without libkwinnvidiahacks4 or is there a better way?

Ubuntu is a pain to support because of these hacks.
I don't run it, so sgfxi support is just what it is. libkwinnvidiahack4 is not known to me, what does it hack, how does it work, can it be left in during an install of the standard nvidia driver? Do this: apt-cache depends libkwinnvidiahack4 and: apt-cache rdepends libkwinnvidiahack4 and let me see that output. If it's not a core nvidia thing, I can blacklist it, but if it conflicts with the real nvidia driver, then I can't blacklist it. to install kwin just do apt-get install kwin Do: apt-cache depends kwin too while we're at it. Ubuntu does a lot of weird and hard to deal with things with their nvidia driver and fglrx driver handling, in fact, I'm surprised to see ubuntu users running sgfxi at all but I guess some of you figured out how to handle it. Adding blacklists or whitelists to the nvidia cleanup tool is easy, I just have to know what the repercussions will be of doing that. Back to top |

Well sgfxi sure is a lot easier than the mess I run into when I first tried to install the nvidia driver. As you can see kwin is actually named kde-window-manager. I had a serious bug with the free driver. Something like this:https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/993187 Back to top |
thanks, please try sgfxi again and see if it works. I've whitelisted that kwinnvidiahacks package.
