sgfxi ERROR: (245)
I attempted to install nvidia driver 173.14.31 onto updated iquorix kernel 3.3.0-1.dmz.1-liquorix-686... Sgfxi prompted that the driver does not support the kernel but allowed for override via "! 6" for testing purposes... I proceeded... the scripted then failed throwing "ERROR: (245) The nvidia installer exited with the error: 139"... I then rebooted to older functional kernel 3.2 kernel where nvidia driver was already previously installed with sgfxi and that failed to initialize nvidia module....I then tried to reinstall the same driver that worked previously onto 3.2 and that oddly threw the same error 245...it did the same again for an older kernel as well. So, sgfxi refuses to install driver now for all those kernels giving error 245.
I can confirm that 173.14.31 does indeed work for all of those kernels...including 3.3 as I ran nvidia installer manually and everything went through fine except saying that "The distribution-provided pre-install script failed!". I'm not sure why it gives an error for older kernels... Please update sgfxi accordingly. Thanks. Sgfxi checks for the error status of the nvidia installer file itself, what it reports. If it reports error, sgfxi reports error.
There should be no distribution specific installer files running at all in the nvidia installer, unless something has changed. Possible. However, sgfxi cannot know that an error actually doesn't matter, it's out of its range of function. so if the nvidia supplied run package for the installer which is downloaded is executed by sgfxi, and if that run file reports error, then sgfxi will also exit with error. If the error is incorrect, you might want to file a bug report on the nvnews.com forums and let them know the installer is giving an error even though it's working. Where does this come from? Received signal SIGSEGV; aborting. That usually means something or someone terminated a process, did you? Also, why are you not using the default driver, does this card require the 173 driver, if it does, i'll update the driver id number, generally you should not be overriding the driver version unless you want to use an older one. The 173 series is for legacy fx5xxx type cards, not newer ones. I don't know the era of your card. Back to top |
I rechecked the card ids, that 0309 does appear to be a legacy 3 173 driver type card, as with the geforce 5xxx series.
So future sgfxi uses should not require usng the -o override for your specific quadro card now. This isn't related to the actual issue, an error being reported by the installer. /usr/src/sgfxi-downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.31-pkg0.run || echo error number: $? if you run that, and if it echoes out that error, that means the installer reported an error. If it's confirmed that the nvidia installer is running without error on legacy 3 type cards, like yours, and kernel 3.2 or 3.3, then that's an issue I'll need to look at, otherwise things seem to be working as expected. Running the override is the correct action, and if you get 245 error, with a sub error reported that is the actual nvidia installer error, that means sgfxi is working correctly. The bug lies in the installer. I find that filing bug reports with nvidia on nvnews is a good thing to do, they actually fix them. Your system happening to run even with error exit of the installer is what we call a fluke, coincidence, nice accident, but is certainly not something I'd consider as a reason to change the current sgfxi function. But check it out, and report back if you find out more, already your bug report yielded an improved nvidia legacy card detection. To be clear: if you run sgfxi on 3.2, and it exits with error 245, that is why it does not claim to have 3.2 supported, same for 3.3, though it is good to hear that it works for you. Other users, sadly, no such luck, it does not work. Although that's for xorg version usually, those legacy cards currently do not support xorg 1.11/12 I believe, not sure the cutoff. I rechecked, no error case on 3.2 by default, not sure if I should add 3.3 support however. Ubuntu is getting to be much less reliable as a test/debugging base due to its increasingly aggressive hacks for non free driver handling. You'll have to paste the very end of the nvidia log included in the sgfxi log, that's where it would have put the actual error, these forums I assume cut off the extra long posting. Back to top |
Thank you for your prompt informative response.
Running '/usr/src/sgfxi-downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.31-pkg0.run || echo error number: $?" as root returned "permission denied - error number 126" I have ran sgfxi successfully, prior, on various iterations of liquorix 3.2...it is upon trying to install 173.14.31 driver onto 3.3 then it threw error 245. And after that, the driver stopped working on 3.2 and I had to reinstall...which gave me the same error 245 for 3.2 kernel, which had worked prior to this - flawlessly. Running nvidia installer manually for both 3.2 and 3.3 kernels went through without errors and is working just fine as far as I can tell. So I don't know if my bug report to nvidia would be relevant . If it is I would be willing to submit it and have it fixed. I did not realize the log was cut off until you mentioned. Here is the end of the log: -> Kernel module compilation complete. -> Installing both new and classic TLS OpenGL libraries. -> Searching for conflicting X files: -> done. -> Searching for conflicting OpenGL files: -> done. -> Installing 'NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86' (173.14.31): executing: '/sbin/ldconfig'... executing: '/sbin/depmod -aq 3.3.0-1.dmz.1-liquorix-686'... -> done. -> Driver file installation is complete. -> Running post-install sanity check: -> done. -> Post-install sanity check passed. -> Shared memory test passed. -> Running runtime sanity check: -> done. -> Runtime sanity check passed. -> Would you like to run the nvidia-xconfig utility to automatically update you r X configuration file so that the NVIDIA X driver will be used when you res tart X? Any pre-existing X configuration file will be backed up. (Answer: N o) -> Installation of the NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for Linux-x86 (version: 173.14.31) is now complete. this has to be run as root, of course. Might also need to be extracted, I don't remember all the steps. Permission denied usually means you need to be root. The version difference I can't know, sometimes I miss when I upload a new version of sgfxi and it's not where it's supposed to be, while the version number file is updated, doesn't happen a lot, but it happens. It's working now, at 1.17.88 Ubuntu has done some seriously messed up things lately with non free video driver install, I get bad reports on that, and since it's ubuntu leaving standard debian type practices for bad hacks, I won't be trying to work around those issues. Does make debugging a royal pain though. However, remember this: when the installer exists with 245, no matter what you believe, the nvidia installer, the current one, did in fact give an error on completion. Ubuntu does so many things that are very bad it's getting very hard to support them, some are taken from debian, like default runlevel 2 for desktop start, rather than the old and sane standard of 3/5, 3 being no x, 5 being user desktop start. to install this you have to have x stopped, or the nvidia installer will exit with an error and fail. You can determine what error the nvidia installer is exiting with, but we already know, it's 139, assuming that is actually c oming from the nvidia installer and not ubuntu for some weird reason. With real debian, the scenario you describe is simply not possible, that is, if the same driver installed on 3.2 then not on 3.3, it would install on 3.2, but with ubuntu, I am no longer able to state that such is the case because they have issued such brutal hacks to try to deal with video driver issues it is really not possible or desirable to fix them or work around them, unless there is a simple package I can add to sgfxi's remove list for nvidia and or fglrx that might help get rid of whatever ubuntu is doing. Sadly, at this point, the only real bug reports I can trust for any driver are in debian systems, true debian, because they adhere to standards and don't rely on hacks, and thus are predictable. sgfxi itself has always either installed the clean standalone nvidia driver from their run package, which has basically always worked well, or used the distro generated drivers, which have been hit or miss. In the older days, a few years ago, uninstalling the debian nvidia packages was hit or miss too, but they did a really good job fixing that, and dkms, so those both now work, and are also predictable, that is, remove the packages, and debian is restored more or less to the state it was in prior, except some kms nouveau type gunk, which is another story, not related usually to this issue. To be clear, if you used ubuntu's pacakges to install nvidia, then removing those should have restored the base system to a steady and predictable state. This is apparently however not the case anymore, and that's too bad, because breaking debian's core predictability is not a small error, it's a serious failure. It introduces a third set of variables that make the thing virtually impossible to solve or track, unless one gets paid to do so, of course, then it's just work, like any other work, pays the bills. Since ubuntu does not pay me in this case, I have basically no incentive to deal with it, but I will ask a kubuntu guy I talk to what his experiences are, he runs one of their forums so maybe he's got a hint.
