Problems with ATI Graphics on LMDE...
I've been trying to use SGFXI to install the driver for my integrated ATI graphics card however the first time round the installer froze and so I tried again however thatg didn't work and so I restarted my PC and then of course it didn't work so I renamed my xorg.conf from the live cd which worked out okay =] however when trying again to install the driver via SGFXI I get the error that the driver is already installed
basically how can I rtectify the problem and get my pc sorted... log: :: Code :: =========================================================

I was not able to use catalyst 11.8 with a configuration similar to the yours, try with the 11.7 in my case it works.
AMD driver blob is randomic sometime "work" and some not. Otherwise you must use the open driver radeon. Back to top |

Do NOT try to install non free video drivers using the -X option, they will fail. ati/amd fglrx especially will fail most spectacularly. As you saw. So why exactly did you use that option when you didn't know why or what it would do, except crash the install, as you discovered? Don't use it, and it will install fine. Better yet, do ctrl+alt+f1, login, and start sgfxi that way, ideally as root. You can't install non free video drivers using the run package installers with X running period. Back to top |

fglrx 11-7 doesn't support xorg 1.10, so posting that data is useless.
I don't trust the data you're providing to be honest. First of all stop making up things to try that can't possibly work, then posting the failures that resulted from these inventions, they do not help me at all, nor you. Feel free to try these on your own, I don't care about that, but don't post these things to me, it wastes my time. This means, run the default sgfxi output. that's this command, period: sgfxi you have an hd3000 integrated card, that is supported by current drivers allegedly. I'm guessing you are insisting on leaving X running, that won't work, fglrx crashes when you try to kill x, at least it often does. Also, you'll need the crash log from fglrx itself, not just sgfxi, I think that name has changed but I can't say for sure, let me check. /usr/share/ati/fglrx- install.log actually you can check, does that file exist? Again, if you have X running, fglrx will fail. If you use older fglrx driver version, fglrx will fail, if you have Xorg 1.11 fglrx will fail. so the only driver you should be testing and posting results on is the current latest fglrx, the sgfxi default. So, here's precisely what you need to do. Nothing else, do not invent other options, do not post output from anything else: exit x, turn off x, or better, boot into no x mode, something that Mint foolishly made much more difficult to do than it should be, so that's too hard to explain to you. So, do this: exit X, login as root, or sudo su will get you to the root prompt too. then do: service gdm stop ( or gdm2, or kdm), or whatever is running your desktop login. After you stop X, and make sure it's not running do that like this: ps aux | grep 'X ' Note the space after the X and make sure the only things that appear are the grep search itself. So, to repeat: exit x, stop x, confirm x is stopped, run: sgfxi if it then fails, look at the fglrx install log. If that log has a new name, tell it to me so I can update sgfxi to include that in the sgfxi error log. If the driver now fails, post a bug report whereever ATI/AMD wants you to do that, I don't deal with ati/amd much because they suck. Also of course, try running radeon: sgfxi -N radeon which will install the free xorg driver and clean out all the other stuff. As before, make sure X is off, not running, since fglrx gets grouchy if it is asked to terminate in any way other than the way it wants at that moment, whatever that might be. Normally none of this extra stuff is required, but you have done so many wrong things that there may be screwed up fglrx cruft in your system at this point, it's very hard to say. I suggest you reset the system with: sgfxi -N radeon FIRST, then reboot, and see if x works at that point, if it does, then your system is basically clean, and you can proceed to the actual fglrx install steps. And in the future, stop doing stuff that you have no idea what means or does, and expecting any result than the failure you are getting. Back to top |
Before I not noticed that was an integrated card, is a waste of time try to use catalysts, is a lot better use radeon, less pain during updates and stable basic driver that work.
I use some time catalyst because I have an HD5850 where if the AMD driver work there are big difference on 3D and I love play with configuration and test stuff. Back to top |
Well that was pretty unfriendly to say the least! have you ever tried to be slightly more polite? I'm not trying to deliberately mislead your or make up stuff as you put it! I'm only after some help if what I provided to enable you to help me was not enough or not the right thing all you had to to do was ask for more information or not help at all, I didn't come here to be insulted and abused by anyone.
as to your point about fglrx 11-7 not supporting the version of xorg I was only trying what iotaka had suggested (thank you for trying to help iotaka) I did not know that this was the case. I see that although you might be going about it the wrong way that you are trying to help me however I have also tried your instructions to reset the system by using sgfxi -N radeon after exiting x and stopping x however it shows another error. I will post back later on when I next get a minute what the error was. Thank you Back to top |
Sometimes I try being more polite, yes, but other times I'm not interested in spending my support time unproductively, that's just how it goes, I don't get paid for this keep in mind.
However, with no further data I'll just stop now and let others look into it, I've provided all the information you need to resolve the issue, my main concern is not if there is a bug with the driver, or if there is odd unpredictable user error involved, but simply to see if there was a bug or failure in sgfxi itself, which there isn't and wasn't. The error you saw on X stop or whatever is the reason you get these failures, it's kind of predictable, so I'll let you figure out how to turn off X and go on with more profitable/interesting pursuits. For the basics on how to operate your system, like doing what I suggested, I suggest using the Mint forums for how tos and help. I might try expanding the x stop routine which should do some error checking to add even more, but testing on ati/fglrx is really no fun and it's the only one that has these issues. Have a nice day.
