I will try with the oneiric module-init-tools and see if that's the problem Back to top |

Having GCC 4.6 did not solve the problem. Manually creating initrd did!

That makes sense, the backtrace in the screenshot was pretty sparse, and the error is very familiar for anyone who cannot find their root partition or the drivers to mount them.

@skotadopsyxos, your suggested workaround definitely works. I've verified this on three different PCs. Thanks.
Damentz, can the update-initramfs and dpkg-reconfigure be incorporated into the 3.0 kernel packages? In the meantime I'm building the initrd images each time there's a kernel update. Back to top |

For debian (not Ubuntu, sorry) users, smxi has always run update-initramfs. for reasons like this. However, smxi will never get ubuntu support, too much work, and I don't use ubuntu. But debian users shold have no issues since this is just normal smxi behavior on its kernel package installs.

what does smxi has to do with this problem??
It looks like for some reason in the latest packages initrd is not created.. update-initramfs is/should/does anyway run every time you install certain packages even in ubuntu Back to top |

Had the same problem, here's what fixed it: module-init-tools <= 3.12 is not able to handle kernel versions 3.0+, and so update-initramfs is not generating a good initrd (either not at all or not a usable one). You need version 3.16 or newer. Download it from here: launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/i386/module-init-tools/3.16-1ubuntu1, then run
:: Code :: sudo dpkg -i module-init-tools_3.16-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
sudo update-initramfs -u -k all Then reboot. It should boot fine now. Back to top |

you can't really install this kernel (from the package/repository) and don't have module-init-tools 3.16 installed... That's not the problem here
in the latest package 3.0-5 initramfs still doesn't get created... Back to top |
|||||
Actually you can, apparently. I couldn't do it until yesterday either, it complained I needed module-init-tools 3.16 which was unavailable, but then yesterday I managed to install 3.0-5 while still having module-init-tools 3.12. Nobody complained, no unresolved dependencies, it just went and installed. I didn't tinker or mess with dpkg/apt dependencies myself, I'm guessing 3.0-5 removed the dependency for some reason.
Either way, I thought whoever has this initrd problem, it's worth checking the version of module-init-tools they have installed. Back to top |
|||||
I removed the dependency for version 3.16 of module-init-tools, but I can't support Ubuntu beyond that. The package scripts I use were developed specifically for Debian.
Maybe Ubuntu needs a newer version of the initramfs-tools package? Back to top |
