Intel Graphics are not configured, just installed. The xorg.conf is created, it says "intel", but without the needed configuration, there is no acceleration whatsoever. All you get is a color screen that's too slow for even a pretty screensaver.

what is the needed configuration? That's easy enough to add, I don't try to follow the specifics of every driver configuration on xorg.conf, I just wait for users to request a new one if required.

Unfortunately I have no idea. I'm a Linux end user, not a developer nor a hobbyist.

I'm getting a whopping 60 fps (yes, sixty) from glxgears; running on either Mint 10 (Ubuntu 10.10) or Mint Debain (testing).

All I've found that looks remotely useful is:

OK, I booted from a knoppix CD and get an avg. of 600 fps, a much better result. Below is the xorg.conf from knoppix. I have no idea what else they may have tweaked, but if I can provide you with any info from the running system, just ask.

:: Code ::

I'd have have to have only the intel specific stuff from that xorg.conf, that's a generic one that I assume is designed to support a generic range of systems, what sgfxi needs is only the intel specific stuff.

I also don't know what that is, sadly.

Maybe someone else does.

The KNOPPIX CD must be using the Intel driver built in the kernel, like the nouveau driver (I don't know if the words I'm using make any sense at all but I mean it wouldn't be the Intel xorg driver, right?).

As a matter of comparison, I have an NVIDIA card and KNOPPIX's xorg.conf is just like yours except for the fact that the driver is listed while in yours the driver is ommited.

Also maybe you could post your xorg.conf from the troublesome system.
One thing I've heard about is that
:: Code ::
Section "DRI"
   Mode 0666

is needed for Intel drivers to work properly.

There's nothing wrong with your graphics. All DRI compatible OSS drivers for 3d enable vsync by default to limit your FPS to your refresh rate now-a-days.

If you remove xorg.conf and still don't get real acceleration, then you must be missing a package.
