Liquorix kernel won't recognize my mp3 player

I am an American living and working in Central Asia and needed an mp3 player. So I found a cheap little knockoff model called Audionic. Here's the thing. My liquroix kernel (2.6.36-0.dmz.10-liquorix-686) won't recognize the mp3 player or the usb drive itself. It recognizes other usb sticks with no problems, but not this one. Also, if I boot into my standard kernel, I have no problems using the usb drive on the mp3 player. FYI, I'm running Debian XFCE (testing). I'd really like to get this to work because the liquorix kernel is my default in GRUB2, and I really don't want to have to reboot everytime just to add and remove music. Thanks. Any ideas?

Make sure the player is set to use MSC mode, that's where it looks like a usb memory stick to the system, not MTP or autoselect.

I don't see a place to change those settings, but I would think that it's already set properly since my other Linux kernel sees it as a USB flash drive. Right?

the point here would be to get rid of the 'assumption' and actually know by forcing this setting explicitly. Since it's a knockoff, there is no knowledge base about it, I can't tell you how to set anything in it, etc, unless google is aware of the issue re some other Linux user with 2.6.36 running into the same issue.

There's no problem with 2.6.36 liquorix kernels + media device in general, a sansa fuze for example works fine on that kernel, though I haven't tested it on the last version of the liquorix 2.6.36.

In general it's not a good idea to buy no name brands in order to save a few yuan or whatever when you are running Linux, you want to stick with known good devices, much less pain long term.

If I could buy name-brand I would, but in the 3rd world country that I live in, the knockoff is the only one available.

What does dmesg report when you plug in the usb drive? Can you run dmesg | tail -n20 when booted to each kernel a moment after plugging in your mp3 player?

Also, look in /dev for another block device (sdb, sdc, etc). It could be that XFCE has a small incompatibility with new kernels that's preventing it from finding your mp3 player.

I don't know if you really wanted all of this, but here's the result of "dmesg" in the Liquorix kernel.

One other thing. I was looking through the thread to make sure that I had fully explained myself, and I wanted to make sure that everyone knew that I appreciate your help. My comment above about buying "name-brand if I could," could have been interpreted as me being snooty, and that certainly wasn't my intention. It's just true. I can rarely get name-brand items where I live and work. Thanks for your help, and I love my Liquorix kernel.
