how do i use smxi etc

Hi
I am relative new comer to Linux. I have tried a few distro's and have settled on LMDE. I am having trouble finding a driver for my new graphics card (winfast px8600 gts tdh) and someone suggested that i tried using smxi/fglrx which I have just installed. My problem is that every time I open it up in terminal it say's that it can't run as x/desktop is running and gives you two options. I have tried both with no luck so how do I get to use this program. Sorry for the stupid question but I have no idea what is going on. I have tried to find out by reading the doc's but without success.

Hi,
I have answered my own question by pressing a lot of keys and ended up with ALT + F1 so no problem now. Thanks
