I installed Mepis 8.5 on a System 76 Pangolin laptop with a 9300M Nvidia card. I then installed smxi to handle upgrades and install the Nvidia driver. Worked like a charm and thank you!

So to the desktop I went. This machine uses an Nvidia 9800 GT card. Once again smxi downloaded and installed with no problem using a wireless connection.

Note: This machine must be wireless. There is no access to a hard-wire connection. It uses a Linksys wireless card identified as having a Ralink chipset.

So, fired up smxi as usual and immediately got a message telling me no internet connection could be found. Smxi next offered to install the appropriate Ralink driver to activate the wireless card. I elected to do so.

This returned the message: "requires library file sm-lib-kernel but it is missing."

If I logout as Root and log back in as User I can do "startx" and bring back the GUI desktop. I do have to restart my wireless connection at that point.

I cannot find "sm-lib-kernel". Can anyone tell me what this message means and what I must do to have smxi work as it does on my laptop?

Hmmmm, please do not suggest I buy another laptop. No funds for that solution at the moment! :)
