First, the command cannot be run in X, that is, you cannot create an xorg.conf file in X, X will not permit it.

I'm going to assume that is the source of the error, barring further details.

I should actually add logging in there to show if X is running or not, would make debugging failures easier, since that's the number one reason the X -configure command would fail.

Yes, I got the error, then shut down x and re-ran as root.

ok, the only bug there, and I would say it's a slight bug, is that sgfxi didn't give you better information on the failure.

I'll just add an extra bit of information to the error message: if x is running then... print out information telling user to shut down x.
