hi,

i run debian squeeze/sid with 2.6.32-trunk-686 kernel.
and i run sgfxi to install my GeForce 9600 GT drivers.

it works fine but when i turn it off and on again,
X fails to load and i have to run sgfxi again !
everytime with both of my computers ...

what could i do to avoid running the script over and over ?

thank you and sorry for my english !

Not enough information, my guess is that there is something slightly off in your system.

sgfxi has however recently undergone a huge update, with a lot of new code, so it is possible a bug crept in, though I haven't seen any.

I've been testing with that kernel on sid and I found no problems, and debian isn't using kms with nouveau in their kernels yet as far as I know, which could cause such problems.

When you see only a black display, it's usually caused by the wrong screen getting the information.

Usually if you look at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log, the last 50 lines or so, it will show the error if it's an xorg error.

If you see no error at all, it simply means the wrong screen is picked.

So my guess is you have a customized xorg.conf file that is incorrect, please use paste.debian.net and paste the LINK to the file so I can take a quick look at it. Also paste a link to /var/log/sgfxi/sgfxi.log so I can take a look at that, just to make sure there's nothing obviously wrong or off, and also to show me what you actually did in the install.

Thanks for the answer !

Here is my xorg.conf :
pastebin.com/bBfHmjnx

I have to reboot to get the /var/log/Xorg.0.log
with the errors, i didnt copy it so far, i will post it.

Anyway there were errors : I remember "could not load
nvidia module" or something like that.

On my other computer (the one with the geforce 9600) :

/var/log/Xorg.0.log :

pastebin.com/M6REucU5

and xorg.conf :

pastebin.com/Pu2iutxy

(same problem on both computers ...since 1 or 2 days !)

Hi,

today i decided to boot on kernel 2.6.30-2-686
and i ran sgfxi : i had an error because
linux-headers were missing and were not
in the repos. i came back to 2.6.32-trunk-686
and ... problems are gone !

did the same thing on the other computer without
the step running sgfxi on 2.6.30 and it did nothing,
so i rebooted on 2.6.30 ran sgfxi got the same
error and i can boot on 2.6.32-trunk ...

problem solved.

Thanks !

I don't really understand this, but since the problem is gone that's good.

I've never really seen the 2.6.32-trunk-686 kernels, what are they for? and what makes them different from say: 2.6.32-3-686?

It's also possible that sgfxi had a bug in it briefly, it has been heavily updated in the last 2 weeks and maybe something was wrong in it, but I can't tell you for certain.

It might have been simply the bug where sgfxi failed to start X during a module build (as opposed to a reinstall of driver) because it hadn't stopped it previously. That bug is now fixed.
