hi
after i change from NVidia to ATI (Radeon HD5770) i start sgfxi in my Sidux but after pressing to every question enter (as mentioned in the script) X-Server and KDE wouldn't start. The tool (sgfxi) say that it dowload the driver 10.1 for Linux and installed it (as far as i can analyze it). So any recommendations what i should do or search for?
thx for help

That tool should have given an error message for the new Xorg, assuming you are running the new Xorg 1.7 (check X -version).

Please use the service: paste.debian.net to paste your /var/log/sgfxi/sgfxi.log so I can confirm what happened there.

The sgfxi script should exit with unsupported xorg stuff.

sorry, double checked, I'd forgotten to activate the xorg test for 10-1, that's been corrected now.

Moving from nvidia to ati was not a very clever decision I'm sad to tell you, unless you want low performing Xorg drivers, which may or may not support some of the features of your card.

To get a display, you will have to install the radeonhd driver:
sgfxi -N radeonhd

Nobody knows when ATI/Amd are planning on releasing xserver 1.7 support, most guesses think it will happen right when X server 1.8 is released.

ok thats not a good news. I also tried what you said and get an "error (222): the version of the xorg server you want to install is not available for your version of sidux :sid"

So this doesn't work. Do you have any other idea.
thx a lot

that sounds like another bug in sgfxi, let me check that, the radeonhd should install fine. Some parts of sgfxi that I almost never use get a bit behind the times, and bug reports like you are making here help bring it back into good order.

Please use paste.debian.net to upload your /var/log/sgfxi/sgfxi.log file.

This should have worked, I need to see if some unexpected thing has changed in sidux in terms of detections. That log file will show me probably what I need to know.

hi
so i have done it.

Posting 59147 from hape-sgfxi posted at 2010-02-08 17:47:00 expires: 2010-02-11 17:47:00

hope this helps. Meanwhile i have started the X-Server(KDE) with the Vesa driver and the system comes up so my hope is that this isn't an hardware error.

If ATI gives a new try with the next catalyst driver it should be better (hope springs eternal)

:: Code ::
sgfxi start options:  -N redeonhd

as you can see, you made a typo: should be: sgfxi -N radeonhd

Not redeonhd. The good thing about the logging is that it shows what actually occurs in the system, not what one would wish had occurred.

That's all that was wrong there, a typo. The package is ready and waiting for you to install it.

hi
ok that was an error from me. But the error message was not pointing in the right direction.
So after i start it correct i end up with a black screen with the mouse as a rectangle in the middle. So it seems that nothing works for the 5770 so i have to wait for a better driver.

Correct, sadly, you are now in the world of fictional ATI / AMD 'support', which as you can see is for newest card and somewhat new Xorg basically non existent for either free or non free driver.

There may be work-arounds, I don't know, I do not follow the specifics of ATI development any longer because their programming group showed me long ago that they are lacking in any skilled hackers, and are managed by someone without any visible signs of pride or competence.

The real choices are much simpler: for basic desktop, old, very old ati card with working xorg drivers, ideally radeon. For advanced driver features, older xorg, older kernel. ATI is unable and unwilling to actually even remotely approach the level of nVidia programmers for non free, and the xorg stuff leaves you just as helpless if it doesn't work as the non free would.
