Linux-2.6.31-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686 is a kernel built by damentz. He has built it with many tweaks to enhance many things. A lot of users have had great success using these kernels but of course as it's "free" it come with no warranty and your mileage may vary.

Best thing to do is install it and try it out. You just need to select it at boot from your menu.lst.

If you find any issues or bugs just post back. If it doesn't work out for you it can easily be removed once your booted into your original kernel.

Good luck and enjoy.

I don't believe the dmz kernels are installable on lenny at this point. They are built with gcc 4.4 or at least they were, you can always try, but I think it won't install.

Debian Testing or Sid.

Squeeze will also work for about 6-12 months after it goes stable, then something will probably change and you'll have to wait for the next stable to hit.

running lenny here with gcc-4.4 (pulled binutils and a few other deps) and initramfs-tools from testing

:: Code ::
:~$ uname -r
2.6.31-9.dmz.2-liquorix-686

can't be sure yet if a problem won't surface later but good so far. Any advice?

yes, the firmware-linux package, that should make it reasonably complete.

Lenny users be warned

Some problems have surfaced on two machines with intel video. Maybe other free drivers. One with nvidia is OK

On one the screen was ok in X (kde3) but garbled if X closed to console

The second, garbled screen in X

The first was fixed by reenabling testing and running sgfxi. Some xorg stuff got upgraded then video fine but keyboard and touchpad issues. I fixed the keyboard by selecting evdev in kcontrol but touchpad (it's a lenovo notebook) tap function no longer works.

The second machine I have not yet investigated

At this point one is on the road to mixed Debian and must be able to fix their own.

Thanks TechAdmin for the tip on linux-firmware. Unfortunately it did not fix this issue.

My original reason for a later kernel in Lenny was an Afatech dvb card not functional on 2.6.26 (good on the liquorix). Maybe a backport is easier but I will persevere with the liquorix for now

I have testing installs here too but now use Lenny+kde3 for my main system. It doesn't break unless you give it abuse and has a fully-functional desktop!

EDIT

techpatterns.com/forums/about1437.html Damentz says here that liquorix kernels will not work reliably with older xorg and it may also help to upgrade udev and hal.

EDIT 2

Upgrading xorg would remove kde3 and install.......******* kde4!
No thanks.
