Just a note.
I installed antiX and decided to use sgfxi immediately to get nvidia working.
sgfxi downloads the correct drivers, but errors as it cannot build as build-essentials is not installed.

The problem is that an apt-get update needs to be run before running sgfxi for the first time. Now that MEPIS users are increasingly using sgfxi, would it be a good idea to have some check that there has been an apt-get update before it is run for the first time?
Or, to include in the error message something like, 'please run apt-get update'

sgfxi should be running apt-get update prior to package install, but I guess the very first time when it looks for presence of packages it needs to run it too, ie, if some file is not set, let me see if I can remember which, I think smxi tests for that already.

added that feature, give it a test to make sure it works, now if the update file is null, unset or empty, sgfxi should run an update first.

This is what I did.

Installed antiX-base
On reboot to desktop, Ctrl Alt F1,
login as root, sgfxi - it fails.
apt-get update
run sgfxi again and all is ok.

The problem here is that your system for some reason isn't showing that build-essential is available from apt even though the test shows that the file: /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin
exists.

A fresh install I believe should not have this file existing until the first apt-get update runs, at least I think that's how it is, unless you do a debian install that builds from apt during the install, then it's going to be present.

I'd have to double check that, but can you just try it with a livecd again, and see if that file exists, and what it's size is.

I can change the test to test for min size I guess, but give me this data for a fresh install with no apt update run.
du -h /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin

and we can figure it out.

yes, I confirmed this, on a fresh livecd boot of sidux, there is no such file existing.

This may be a bug in your system or antix setup, that file should not exist until apt-get update has run at least once, and if it exists, the database should be noting the presence of that package, which after the update it does.

Also show: ls -l /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin

so I can see the age of it, the one on a fresh install, without apt-get update run.

In smxi I test for that file, if it's not there I know no update has been run, so it's odd that it's present. Even if it was out of date that package should show, just in an out of date version, and sgfxi always runs apt-get update prior to the first package install in all cases.

There might be other possibiilties, you'll have to go from the fresh iso to find the place it messes up. It's possible that file was left there after building the iso, I think anyway, I'm not sure, it depends on how the iso is built I suppose. It's possible to compare dates though it's a bit of a pain, I prefer not to go that route, it's better to know exactly why that database file does contain other package data but does not contain the build-essential package data, that shouldn't be happening.

I think lenny has that package too, so that shouldn't be the reason either, and sid and testing definitely have it.

livecd /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin exists and is 18M.
For live.

:: Code ::
ls -l /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 18598248 2009-12-19 04:40 /var/cache/apt/pkgcache.bin

Now to install

Fresh install, no update.

The livecd, assuming that's correct, 18 mB, I don't see anything I can do about that, unless there's a way to know it's a livecd that is foolproof for mepis/antix.

The fresh install, yes, that can be done.

Try it again, I set it if file is < 5mB, run update first. Not sure what the minimum sizes are, but I think once updated files are at least 10mB large.

However, the real question would be why with a full database file mepis/antix isn't showing that package until apt update runs, that's a bug I think, that's what it looks like to me, unless there is some oddness in how that iso is created.

Fixed now. Nothing to do with sgfxi, but to do with antiX livecd.
Sorry about that.
