Anyone trying to decide what release to run as their Desktop should read www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-choosing.en.html

Purely from my own point of view running unstable has more benefits than running testing due to the possible lengthy wait for a package to be fixed. However Unstable probably requires more expertise (although not much I would say).

I did in fact run testing briefly for a while and experienced exactly what they described with vlc being broken for a long time.[/url]

Thanks for this, jelloir. It is very useful and had you not posted I would have missed it.

Myself, I run sid/unstable. I avoid testing just for the reasons mentioned earlier. There can be some breakage in sid but it's usually fixed quickly.

It you want to avoid breakage all together then run stable. The stable versions are always rock solid although sometimes outdated.
