As I just discovered, and have now verified, along with people's bug reports, the new libdrm2. 2.4 that just came into sid breaks fglrx driver.

Solution, for now: add Debian Testing sources to your /etc/apt/source.list or sources.list/debian.list

apt-get update
apt-get install libdrm2/testing

if it offers to downgrade to 2.3, it's fine, and will work.

Solution after you restore working libdrm2: add libdrm2 to smxi automatic hold install list:

In /etc/smxi.org, look for: hold-install=... if present, add item (use ^ as separator) libdrm2

If not present, add: hold-install=libdrm2
save, and wait for later fglrx driver that works again, this WILL NOT get fixed for the time being so if you use Sid, and Testing in a week or so, then make sure to take care of this NOW, before it's too late.

aptitude users, make sure to check that aptitude is actually respecting the hold, it's absolutely terrible about ignoring holds, even when done using its own syntax (so what exactly does aptitude hold libdrm2 mean if it doesn't work as a hold? just a fun thing to type when you feel bored and want your system to fail randomly?)

Remember, this problem libdrm2 is NOT in Lenny, and not yet in Testing, but it will be fairly soon, and once it's in, you won't be able to save your system via a downgrade. It IS in Sid now.
