Simple method, if /var/log/aptitude is detected and svmi or sgfxi are started standalone, they ask you if you want to use apt-get or aptitude first.

If they are started from smxi, smxi passes them the user default automatically.

This pretty much completes all debian compatibility stuff for smxi, svmi, and sgfxi.
