I've had the same error and it's from the main smxi script on line 316, kernels 4 (and higher) are not read correctly.

In smxi it's on line 316:
:: Code ::
KERNEL_NUM...... | grep -Eo "(2\.6|3)\.[0-9]+"

Should be:
:: Code ::
KERNEL_NUM...... | grep -Eo "(2\.6|[3-9])\.[0-9]+"

excellent, this solves a bug someone else reported, which I was unable to find the source of, thanks.

Should now be working.

drb, this should fix the failure, let me know if it doesn't, thanks.

I was looking in the wrong place, I forgot there was another location where that data was set.

Non future proof search pattern was the culprit, I didn't realize that 4 would be coming so soon so in some places the pattern was just 2.6 or 3 starter for kernel version, now all should be 2.6 or 3-9 starter.

Sorry I didn't find the source earlier, I've been a bit busy with work etc.

I get an error when I try to run smxi (it happened two weeks ago but was just heading off on vacation so reporting now) :

:: Code ::
/usr/local/bin/smxi: line 2794: syntax error near unexpected token '}'
/usr/local/bin/smxi: line 2794: '}'

[Edit] smxi doesn't get as far as asking to stop display manager and no log

sgfxi will not build due error "cannot detect gcc version. /usr/bin/gcc-5.1 not found or not installed."

my system has a /usr/gcc-5 directory and the default gcc is set to 4.9.

Is this a typo or now there is a requirement to build the driver with the gcc-5 compiler?

please provide the sgfxi log file: /var/log/sgfxi/sgfxi.log

It's unclear to me where that error comes from, the nvidia installer or sgfxi, sounds like the nvidia thing.

drb, this is all I can tell you:

:: Code ::
#smxi

------------------------------------------------------------------
Your X/Desktop (kde/gnome/xfce etc..) must be shutdown to run this script.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Since you are currently in X, you will need to run smxi again after
X has shutdown, and you have logged back in. You will lose any work
you have not saved on your running desktop.
------------------------------------------------------------------
1 - shutdown-your-desktop Kill X now. Remember, you will need to log back in,
    and start smxi again.
2 - quit-script Quit smxi, don't shut down the current X session or desktop.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Would you like to shutdown your X/Desktop now?
------------------------------------------------------------------
1) shutdown-your-desktop
2) quit-script
#?

maybe a download got corrupted on your end or something.

try replacing smxi: wget -O /usr/local/bin/smxi smxi.org/smxi

and run it again.
