Posted: Jul 18, 07, 22:25    firefox 2 install sets my useragent to Win98 and not XP :(
I use XP SP2. And yet Firefox 2 install sets my useragent to:

:: Code ::
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.8.1.5) Gecko/20070713 Firefox/2.0.0.5

when it should be

:: Code ::
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.5) Gecko/20070713 Firefox/2.0.0.5

I could use an about:config override, but its troubling that I should have to :(

any ideas?

(this machine came factory installed as XP)

I used your script to get the useragent:

I agree that's strange. However, Firefox when it's packaged for windows install will have no idea which windows it will be running on. But that's strange.

Basically you have to change the browser default ID, but I'd post this question in the www.mozillazine.org forums to see why they picked such a uselessly strange default string.

well, the question is, what does the computer information box on that page print out?

The windows 98 thing is weird to be sure, and I don't think it's right. I'd double check it.

thank you, techAdmin, for your interest in my odd firefox problem! :)

now that page shows:

:: Code ::
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.5) Gecko/20070713 Firefox/2.0.0.5

James [1], mozillazine forum, was spot on:

I haven't the slightest idea how that happened because I certainly didn't do it. And no one is supposed to touch that other machine. rrrg

Would you, techAdmin, know a way to check all the other programs to see if any have been stranded in computability mode? short of one at a time on use?

cheers

sorry, I don't use windows any more, I'm not up on the intricacies of it unless it's stuff I have to deal with for client support.
