NEW Download the import blocked site list for adblock. To save the file that opens, just click 'save as' in Firefox and save it to disk somewhere.

This of course requires the truly fantastic Adblock Extension.

<update>Please do not use the Adblock standard version linked to above, use Adblock Plus, it's more stable, does not cause memory issues</update>

To add this to your adblock, just click 'tools -> 'adblock' -> 'preferences', then select the 'adblock options', where you'll see the 'import' option. Click on that, then browse to the downloaded file and open it.

This list will be updated routinely, as we find more ad servers that run ads on sites we've seen. Obviously, there are more complete lists, but this one is pretty small, and seems to do the trick.

If you want a slightly older version, here's a somewhat useable adblock list. You have to cut and past this into your prefs.js file.

:: Code ::
user_pref("adblock.patterns", "*as-eu.falkag.net/* *netshelter.net/* http://ads.osdn.com/* http://ad.doubleclick.net/* *doubleclick.net/* http://a.consumer.net/* http://as.casalemedia.com/* http://media.fastclick.net/* *fastclick.net* *valueclick.com/* *atdmt.com/* http://ads.alwayson-network.com/* http://ads.* http://ads.*** http://ads.osdn.com/?ad_id=* http://*/ads/* http://*insightexpressai.com/* http://*.bluestreak.com/* http://us.a1.yimg.com/* http://jbannerconnect.cjt1.net/* http://cdn1.tribalfusion.com/* http://action.ientry.net/* http://www.tweakers.net/advertenties/banners/* http://adsatt.abcnews.starwave.com/ad/* http://ccas.clearchannel.com/* http://banners.* http://ad2.bbmedia.cz/* http://images.anandtech.com/banners/* http://www.pandasoftware.com/js/pop.js http://*/banner.* http://*/banner/* http://adtech.m7z.net/* http://*.hitbox.com/* http://pbid.pro-market.net/* http://*/adserve/banners/* http://cdn.valueclick.com/* http://servedby.advertising.com/site=* http://ad.yieldmanager.com/* http://servedby.advertising.com/* http://servedby.advertising.com* http://oz.valueclick.com/* http://us.intellitxt.com/* http://*.bravenet.com/* http://static.espn.go.com/swf/fp/* http://adsatt.espn.go.com/ad/* http://adimages.go.com/* http://www.http://*intellitxt.com* http://uk.intellitxt.com/* http://www.zdmcirc.com/* */adserver/* http://www.neomyz.com/* http://media.adlegend.com/* http://*tribalfusion.com/* *intellitxt.com* http://*falkag.net/*  http://*/banners/*  http://www.hostdime.com/Flash/main.swf *intellitxt*  http://altfarm.mediaplex.com* http://adfarm.mediaplex.com/* http://kt4.kliptracker.com/* http://gfx.dvlabs.com/klipmart/*");

Redundancy!

There's a lot of redundancy in this list. Adblock has to try to match every search string with the text...having such redundancy can have a performance hit.

For instance, all of the following groups are the same!
:: Code ::

http://ads.*
http://ads.***
http://ads.osdn.com/*
http://ads.osdn.com/?ad_id=*
http://ads.alwayson-network.com/*

http://uk.intellitxt.com/*
*intellitxt*
http://www.http://*intellitxt.com* (this one isn't even a valid url)

http://media.fastclick.net/*
*fastclick.net*

http://oz.valueclick.com/*
*valueclick.com/*

http://servedby.advertising.com/*
http://servedby.advertising.com*

Along with many others.

Might want to trim it up a bit.

Thanks for noticing that, that's been on the to-do list for a long time, just never got around to it, maybe I'll do it today.

Some of those might have been from earlier adblock bugs, clearly the ones that appeared to be the same wouldn't have been added had the first one worked, I seem to remember that was the case, especially in the cases like:

:: Code ::
*intellitext*
http://intellitext*

adblock used to have problems with wildcards and no initial 'http://....'

This list is now updated to remove duplicate regular expression entries, and will be tested for a while to see if the old bugs have been fixed in terms of the blocking syntax in the definitions.

We'll see how it goes.

<hint>
If you hate avatars as much as I do, this extra line will get rid of almost all of them for you:

http: //*/avatars/* [remove the space between http: and //]
