Thanks for that info H2. Sorry, I had not spotted the sticky thread for bug reports. I was waiting on the other thread for instructions for logs etc.

Installed kde-minimal...that was the trick. On rebooting and starting kde, kaboom ran and all is well. I had never investigated kaboom...didn't know what to expect or look for. My initial exposure to 4.2 was on a fresh install on another partition and didn't like it at all. It is much better now and I may even come to like it. Still not crazy about the way the panel behaves but at least I got it back at the top of my screen where I like it. Anyway, I appreciate all the help.
