I don't mind paying up to $60 or so with shipping. The links are dead in the old modem thread, I usually shop Best Buy or Newegg, but they're not real good at specifying what works with linux.

Thanks -

Just checked the links in the linux modem, they seem to be working. With Linux, the best thing by far is an external modem, some usb types are suspect from what I've read.

If you're willing to spend the money you should have no problems at all getting a real modem, the main thing to look for is that it's an actual hardware modem, not a 'winmodem', which is only a partial modem. Examples of PCI hardware modems are most external modems, from linux modem site Here's an alternatet mirror site. I posted the 'OK' for linux modems here, there are many more that will probably work for linux on that list, but this is enough to get you started. I recommend US Robotics or Lucent based ones, those tend to be much better from my experience.

the chips are apparently 3com:

Other best bets are shop around for a used on online, one of the ones recommended in those threads. I'll see if I can dig up any more.

Does this mean you have your Linux up and running? How exciting. Which distro did you end up with [I've yet to send you off some distros, don't ask me why, laziness I think].

From SUSE HCL [hardware compatability list], these all have full support:

(please keep in mind that this is SUSE distro supporting these, not distros in general.)

This is the link from within that thread which doesn't work:

free.hostdepartment.com/g/gromitkc/winmodem.html

I'm actually in prep for linux right now. I'm going to start with SUSE 9.whatever it is now (I have the distro on cd, it's a couple of "decimals" back but I'll be able to manage the upgrade since it won't be humongous - because of course I will be long in my grave before they get broadband here....)

Yeah, I know you said that before about external modems. I still hate extra externals. Hmmm. Y'know, I have an external 56K that came with the used IBM ThinkPad I bought several years ago. Wonder if I can try that one to expedite setup? It's a Hayes Accura.... years old but still works fine.... but then, so does the ThinkPad as long as it's on "real power" - battery is cr#p though.... Thanks for the list, I'll see what I come up with.

The main impetus here really is that the CXT PCI modem I'm using now is probably on its way to an early grave (just acts like it....) and since I was thinking I'd buy a modem to have on hand for when it does die I also thought I'd just get one that will work with linux.

Here's a site that sells old modems etc, the US robotics is listed at $5.50. Note how big the 0778 is compared to the small Win type modems. That's because it actually runs all the modem function on itself. That's a great price, I might have to pick one up too just to have one.

That links works, I'll double check it though, the one you posted I just clicked and it works. I double checked, they all work, sounds like some dns issue or something in your neck of the woods.

By all means use the external, it will work with no setup, no drivers, if I remember right linux just sees it as another data source or something, that's the easiest way you can set it up.

And you could just cheat, run the power cord and phone line in through an extra pci slot cover, and tape the modem inside your box...

*laughing* Nah - I'm not going that far! I'll just shove it into the top cabinet on my desk....

Here's a screenshot of what I get when I click on those links:

netwizardry.net/screenie.jpg

I don't see any modem info at all....

Problem is on your end somewhere, hard to say where or what. All the links work on my end.

That us robotics internal PCI modem price is pretty good, if it's a legitimate online store, I might have to get one too, that helps long term for future linux boxes.

In between thunderstorms....

I bookmarked the site, thanks. I'll see about it tomorrow, when I hopefully will quit getting dumped every few minutes.
