Error 226 when running sgfxi -B

This morning I run sgfxi -B to in order to install the latest available nvidia driver for my system and got the the error message 226

Kernel is: 2.6.37-0.slh.9-aptosid-amd64,
X.Org 1.7.7

After that I run as suggested sgfxi -! 6

That worked!

I have done the same thing and this trick worked for me too. I have the 270.18 driver installed and no issues with it so far with using my GeForce 7900GS on 2.6.37 Liquorix kernel

Now if Xorg 1.7.7 is supported by the driver, what causes this kind of error to happen?
